Most of the people are quite tolerant for each other\u2019s faith, I think\u201d, Taslima Nasreen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen does not feel that India is an \u201cintolerant\u201d country and wondered why secularists in the country were questioning only Hindu fundamentalists. She also said that a democracy based on pseudo-secularism was not a true democracy at\u00a0all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think India is an intolerant country. Most of the people are quite\u00a0tolerant for each other\u2019s faith, I think\u201d, she said at the Kerala Literature Festival in Kozhikode on Saturday evening, joining the debate over \u2018intolerance\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The author, living in exile in India after incurring the wrath of fundamentalists back home over a novel written by her in 1994, said, \u201cThe laws in the country (India) do not support intolerance. But there are so\u00a0many intolerant people in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"holder-article\"><\/div>\n<p>Responding to a question,\u00a0she said, \u201cWhy secularists in India were questioning only Hindu\u00a0fundamentalists while leaving alone Muslim fundamentalists. True conflict in India was between secularism and fundamentalism, between innovation and tradition and between people who value freedom and who do not\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll religions were anti-women though distortions caused by fundamentalists added to it\u201d, Nasreen said explaining her struggle against fundamentalism. Holding that\u00a0religion should be kept separated from government, she said influence of religion in lawmaking has caused \u201coppression\u201d of both Hindu and\u00a0Muslim women in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>More than 150 writers of national and international repute are taking part in the four-day festival which concludes on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think India is an intolerant country.
