A troubling new documentary has revealed that a Hindu exodus similar to that\u00a0in Kairana, West UP is currently underway in the Sundar Nagri area of the national capital, Delhi.<\/p>\n

The documentary was created\u00a0by Ravijot Singh, a video\u00a0blogger, poet and speaker, and posted on his YouTube Channel<\/a> with the title \u2018Truth of Sunder Nagri \u2013 Are Hindu\u2019s at risk?\u2019 <\/span><\/strong>The 20 minute documentary can be seen below \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ravijot starts by telling us that he decided to visit the Sundar Nagri locality in East Delhi\u00a0and make the documentary after\u00a0a recent incident\u00a0where the evening aarti (<\/em>prayer) <\/em>at\u00a0 Maha Shiv Shakti \u00a0mandir was forcibly stopped by some local Muslims\u00a0as \u2018Ramzan was going on\u2019.<\/p>\n

What happened during the aarti<\/em>?<\/h3>\n

He met the mandir pujari<\/em> (priest) Parvesh Sharma at his\u00a0home, who told him, \u201cLike any mandir, I was doing the evening aarti<\/em> around 7.30 PM when some Muslim families who live close by sent their womenfolk, wearing slippers<\/strong>, into our temple and forcibly stopped the aarti.\u00a0Around 40-50 Muslims had gathered outside the temple. I reported the issue to police but\u00a0no action was taken.\u00a0A few days later I was again doing the evening aarti <\/em>and this time again Muslim women barged into the temple and stopped the aarti<\/em>. More than 200 Muslims gathered this time and got very aggressive with us, and we were saved only after\u00a0I dialed 100 and called police. After police forces arrived, the SHO told us that \u2018these people will not listen\u2019, so you have to adjust and ensure the aarti<\/em> ends sooner.\u00a0The next time, when when we were about to do Hanuman Chalisa with the support of various Hindu organizations, an aggressive mob of 400-500 Muslims chanting \u2018Allah o Akbar\u2019 and with barely concealed weapons opposed us \u2013 heavy police presence was needed to control the situation and the authorities asked us to wrap up the aarti<\/em> quickly. Since that day I have been receiving threatening messages.\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest then goes on to talk about how the demography has changed in Sundar Nagri, a locality\u00a0established in the late 1970s \u2013 from 90% at the beginning, Hindus have fallen to just 40% today, with the drastic fall occurring in the last decade due to a booming second-hand car salvage trade (including in stolen vehicles) which has seen inflow of Muslims and a deteriorating mahaul<\/em>\u00a0(social environment) which has caused\u00a0many Hindus to flee. \u201cYoung Muslim men do\u00a0goondagardi <\/em>(hooliganism), sexually harass Hindu women \u2013 they even stalk girls studying in schools. Decent families, who have the financial means, are moving out of this area \u2013 and this trend will continue,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Another lady from the locality who lives close to a public park tells Ravijot, \u201cWhen Muslim children play cricket in the park and hit the ball\u00a0with full force hitting us, if we complain their parents instead\u00a0argue with us; in the\u00a0evenings anti-social elements gamble and drink in the park \u2013 if we oppose this, they come to beat us. Police is not to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deteriorating Social Environment<\/h3>\n

Another lady recounts how a group of Hindu women walking in the park were intimidated \u2013 a Muslim boy riding a motorcycle in the park, <\/strong>without honking,\u00a0<\/strong>drove his motorcycle right through their group, forcing them to scatter aside. Other elderly Muslims\u00a0\u00a0standing nearby did not admonish the youth.<\/p>\n

Ravijot then had a chat with Rajinder Mawi ji, Chairman of Patit Seva Sansthan, a Hindu NGO in the area. He said that the Seemapuri Vidhan Sabha constituency\u00a0in the area has seen the Muslim electorate grow from 2% in\u00a0the first state election in 1993 to 30% today. Insecurity in Hindus due to\u00a0rising criminality, drugs, abusive language and a deteriorating social climate is one of the main\u00a0reasons for the Hindu exodus. Till 4 years back, Muslims were 49% in Sundar Nagri, but\u00a0are close to 60% today \u2013 which shows that this\u00a0process is accelerating. If one looks at all the cases of eloped mixed marriages in the area from recent years \u2013 the boy is Muslim and girl Hindu. Muslim men\u00a0wearing Hindu kalawa<\/em> (sacred thread) and with assumed names like \u2018Sonu\u2019, \u2018Monu\u2019 have been found standing outside schools\/colleges to lure Hindu girls. Many people have migrated to protect their daughters.<\/p>\n

Rajinder ji goes on to say that out of 18-20 temples in the area, only 5 temples can do aarti<\/em> without any restriction. The rest of the temples have been gradually forced to restrict the aarti <\/em>or end it altogether. The tactics followed are the same as used\u00a0with the Maha Shiv Shakti mandir recently \u2013 an initial \u2018request\u2019 is made to not use loudspeaker during the aarti<\/em>\u00a0as it conflicts with azaan<\/em> (Muslim call to prayer, which occurs over loudspeaker for 3-4 minutes 5 times a day), the next \u2018request\u2019 extract more concessions, and so on. In the end, the mandir pujari, being a solitary figure, gives in to all the demands to \u2018avoid\u00a0trouble\u2019. Rajinder Gautam from AAP party is the MLA for Seemapuri, but he has not intervened much in the matter.<\/p>\n

The Muslim Side of the Story<\/h3>\n

Ravijot then goes to meet the Muslim community to get their side of the story. He talks to Dr. Yakub in a local mosque. Dr. Yakub claims that there is \u2018perfect communal harmony\u2019 in Sundar Nagri with Hindus and Muslims living in perfect brotherhood \u2013 that the trouble is being stoked up by \u2018outsiders\u2019. He plays down the incident wherein aarti<\/em>\u00a0at Shiv Shakti mandir was stopped by a Muslim mob, saying that \u20181 or 2 boys might have created the ruckus and no one knows for sure who they were.\u2019 When probed by Ravijot on whether\u00a0the so-called troublemakers belonged to both communities, Dr. Yakub says the troublemakers are mostly from the Hindu community looking to \u2018gain political mileage and seed hatred\u2019. He and the other Muslims claim that there is no unnatural demographic change occurring in Sundar Nagri\u00a0and that it is all driven by \u2018financial considerations.\u2019<\/p>\n

The documentary ends\u00a0by asking the viewer to draw\u00a0their own conclusions,\u00a0and decide which of the two sides is lying.\u00a0It calls out one lie of Dr. Yakub who had claimed that the aarti<\/em> stoppage incident involved only 1-2 Muslim youth \u2013 a video of that incident\u00a0shown right at the end\u00a0shows many\u00a0sloganeering Muslim men\u00a0facing off with a large police posse. Ravijot Singh must be applauded for his efforts in presenting this serious issue\u00a0with such\u00a0objectivity & finesse \u2013 his documentary\u00a0is the real journalism which our\u00a0mainstream media houses have stopped doing. The documentary ends by asking some searching, uncomfortable questions \u2013 what would the reaction have been across the nation if Hindus had tried to stop the azaan<\/em> in\u00a0a mosque?\u00a0\u00a0What is the meaning of religion if 20 people in Dhaka are slaughtered<\/a> just because they could not recite verses from the Quran?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
