The word \u2018malla\u2019 means gymnast and \u2018khamb\u2019 means pole.<\/p>\n<section class=\"entry\">The earliest mention of the sport\u00a0can be traced back to the 12th century, where it is mentioned in the classic <em>Manas-Olhas<\/em>.Competitive Mallakhamb was first introduced at the national level in 1958, at the National Gymnastics Championships.<\/p>\n<p>There are several kinds of Mallakhamb \u2013 rope Mallakhamb, pole Mallakhamb and hanging Mallakhamb.\u00a0Each\u00a0form involves a gymnast performing contortions\u00a0and poses with a vertical wooden pole or a rope.\u00a0Although the sport involves a variety of skills and incredible strength, not unlike gymnastics itself, it has been largely ignored in India.<\/p>\n<p>In order to ensure it survives and flourishes, Mallakhamb fans have come together to help popularise the sport.<\/p>\n<p>One such group is <a title=\"Mallakhamb India\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mallkhambindia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Mallakhamb India<\/a>, whose members can be seen performing different aspects of Mallakhamb in \u00a0the video below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/exhalesports\/videos\/651523841664774\/\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/exhalesports\/videos\/651523841664774\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mallakhamb is an ancient Indian traditional sport.
