{"id":15455,"date":"2016-08-16T13:12:55","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T07:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org?p=15452&amp;preview_id=15452"},"modified":"2016-08-16T13:12:55","modified_gmt":"2016-08-16T07:42:55","slug":"ancient-temple-renovation-helps-conserve-inscriptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=15455","title":{"rendered":"Ancient temple renovation helps conserve inscriptions &#8211; The Hindu"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"body\">The renovation of an ancient temple dedicated to Sri Saranagatha Ratchagar and Sri Brahanayaki at Thillaiadi near Tirukadaiyur in the district, has helped restore ancient inscriptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\"><b>Agasthiar connect<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">The presiding deity, also known as Sri Sarndhaarai Kaatha Easwaran, is believed to have cured Sage Agasthiar of a disease and an idol showing Sri Agasthiar seeking his blessings can be seen at this temple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">According to official sources, the temple has been a treasure trove of inscriptions dating back to the periods of the Chola, Nayak and Pandya rulers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">The inscriptions give details about the pujai and other rituals performed at the temple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">One of the inscriptions pertains to a grant sanctioned by a ruler for performing \u2018Rudhra japam\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">There are a large number of inscriptions on the northern and southern end of the \u2018prakaram\u2019 of Sri Saarndharai Kaatha Easwaran, \u2018mahamandapam\u2019 and the Vavval netri mandapam besides the entrance at the shrine dedicated to Sri Brahanayaki. The temple was last renovated and \u2018mahakumbabhishekam\u2019 performed on September 14, 1997.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">\u201cAll these inscriptions had been colour-washed, and clearing it with water wash proved a great challenge,\u201d Sivakumar, Executive Officer of the temple told \u2018 <i>The Hindu<\/i>\u2019 here on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">The first phase of renovation focussed on clearing the whitewashed surface, without causing any damage to the stone and letters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">Further, thick growth of vegetation prevented devotees from circum-ambulating the prakaram which were cleared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\"><b>Kumbabhishekam<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">The \u2018kumbabhishekam\u2019 of the temple will be held before the end of this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The renovation of an ancient temple dedicated to Sri Saranagatha Ratchagar and Sri Brahanayaki at Thillaiadi near Tirukadaiyur in the district, has helped restore ancient inscriptions.
