{"id":21607,"date":"2016-10-09T14:11:11","date_gmt":"2016-10-09T08:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org?p=21604&amp;preview_id=21604"},"modified":"2016-10-09T14:11:11","modified_gmt":"2016-10-09T08:41:11","slug":"proposal-for-yoga-culture-courses-in-jnu-rejected-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=21607","title":{"rendered":"Proposal for yoga, culture courses in JNU rejected again"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span class=\"custom-caption\">Following various communications from the HRD Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC), JNU had last year circulated a draft of three courses among its various schools and departments for their feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>JNU\u2019s plan to introduce short-term\u00a0courses in Indian culture and yoga is unlikely to take off\u00a0with the university\u2019s top decision making body rejecting a\u00a0proposal in this regard for the second time.\u00a0The proposal to introduce three short-term courses in\u00a0these subjects had come last year against the backdrop of\u00a0right-wing organisations, including RSS, insisting on\u00a0propagation of culture in educational campuses to promote\u00a0India\u2019s rich heritage and restore its cultural identity.<\/p>\n<p>Following various communications from the HRD Ministry\u00a0and the University Grants Commission (UGC), JNU had last year\u00a0circulated a draft of three courses among its various schools\u00a0and departments for their feedback.\u00a0The proposal was rejected by the Academic Council (AC),\u00a0the university\u2019s statutory decision making body, in November.\u00a0However, the varsity had in May decided to reconsider it and\u00a0the departments were asked to rework on the proposed course\u00a0structure and place the same before the council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reworked draft was placed before the AC last week\u00a0and the proposal was rejected by majority members,\u201d a council\u00a0member told PTI.\u00a0According to the proposed draft, the course on Indian\u00a0culture aimed at expounding the importance of the country\u2019s\u00a0culture as well as exploring the etymological, social,\u00a0spiritual, cultural and mythological aspects and establishing\u00a0Indian values in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe course will contain the texts, thoughts and\u00a0traditions of different cultures and include things like\u00a0religious systems in Indian culture among others. Besides, it\u00a0will have portions from Vedas and selections from epics and\u00a0Jatakas and suggestions on readings of Hindu epics like the\u00a0Ramayana,\u201d the draft read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be basic study of Indian culture to establish\u00a0Indian rituals and values in the world and derive ways from\u00a0these sources to make human life better,\u201d it said.\u00a0The document further said Indian culture cannot be\u00a0understood without the help of \u201cIndian literature, which are\u00a0generally written by sages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also suggested reading of the Ramayana and the\u00a0Bhagavad Gita from Gita Press Gorakhpur (a press in Uttar\u00a0Pradesh that prints hindu religious texts), Acharya Jaidev\u2019s\u00a0Vedic Sanskriti, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar\u2019s \u2018Sanskriti ke Char\u00a0Adhyaya\u2019, among others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following various communications from the HRD Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC), JNU had last year circulated a draft of three courses among its various schools and departments for their feedback.
