The smell, and kick, of Indian spices filled the kitchen air, as the volunteers prepared meals for the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"181\" data-total-count=\"369\">Between sips of chai tea, the women plucked the stems off peppers, peeled cucumbers and diced tomatoes. Heaping bowls of mixed vegetables \u2014 peas and diced carrots \u2014 sat in wait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"37\" data-total-count=\"406\">Outside, the men were still building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"131\" data-total-count=\"537\">The decades-long effort to bring a Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha temple to Long Island is finally over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"251\" data-total-count=\"788\">\u201cWe\u2019re not building a church, we\u2019re building a Hindu temple,\u201d said Samir Bhatt, a volunteer who lives in Hicksville and works as a lawyer. \u201cAnd while we are New York, and we\u2019re still a very progressive, liberal state, it took some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"220\" data-total-count=\"1008\">The golden temple, with domes and flags that stand out against a backdrop of trees, houses and office buildings, stands on Deshon Drive here. Credit: Sasha Maslov for The New York Times<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"caption\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"213\" data-total-count=\"1221\">\u201cOur spiritual leader, His Holiness <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/21\/world\/asia\/pramukh-swami-maharaj-whose-hindu-sect-became-largest-in-us-dies-at-94.html\">Pramukh Swami Maharaj<\/a>\u2019s dream, was to build a temple for the Indian community in Suffolk and Nassau Counties,\u201d said Dr. Vipul Patel, an oncologist who is also a volunteer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"234\" data-total-count=\"1455\">The spiritual leader first talked of a temple in 1988, Dr. Patel said. He died in India in August at 94. In the early 2000s, after B.A.P.S. secured the land in Melville, Pramukh Swami Maharaj blessed the land and sanctified the idols.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"193\" data-total-count=\"1648\">After nearly three decades, \u201cspiritual volunteerism\u201d has brought the project together, Dr. Patel said. Contractors built the bare-bones structure, but volunteers completed most of the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"1954\">B.A.P.S. is a worldwide socio-spiritual organization \u201cfor the nurturing and the growth of the individual,\u201d he said. The temple includes an assembly hall, a dining area, an indoor basketball court and classrooms. Credit: Sasha Maslov for The New York Times<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"caption\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"133\" data-total-count=\"2433\">A book stall inside offers Hindu scriptures at various reading levels, as well as dry meals, like \u201cthe Indian Chex Mix,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"162\" data-total-count=\"2595\">He and his wife will now bring their young sons to the temple here instead of going to Flushing, Queens \u2014 a 10-minute ride each way instead of a 30-minute ride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"213\" data-total-count=\"2808\">\u201cI think, my parents, it was different, so they\u2019d be willing to drive two hours for something that they deem important,\u201d he said. \u201cIn my generation, I think it\u2019s harder. Every minute is accounted for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"221\" data-total-count=\"3029\">Proximity aside, going to the Melville temple is \u201calmost like an experience, as well,\u201d Mr. Bhatt said. His children were in awe of the temple when they saw it, the way he had only seen them react to new toys, he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"236\" data-total-count=\"3265\">\u201cIn an ideal world, worshiping is worshiping, right? You could sit in your house, and you can do that,\u201d Mr. Bhatt said. \u201cBut to feel the serenity, the sanctity, in a traditional, authentic place of worship has a different feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"84\" data-total-count=\"3349\">B.A.P.S. worked for years to overcome the logistic and financial obstacles, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"258\" data-total-count=\"3607\">When Bhumi Joshi was a little girl, she learned about her Hindu heritage at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/14\/nyregion\/14temple.html\">B.A.P.S. mandir in Flushing, Queens<\/a>. Credit: Sasha Maslov for The New York Times<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"199\" data-total-count=\"3806\">\u201cIn New York, which is metropolitan, you get Indian food at every corner,\u201d she said, but to learn how to cook and eat ethnic food is different, and an important part of understanding the culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"113\" data-total-count=\"3919\">To have a B.A.P.S. temple on Long Island in addition to the one in Queens \u201cmeans everything,\u201d Ms. Joshi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"88\" data-total-count=\"4007\">\u201cThis is where my children will learn who they are, where they come from,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"145\" data-total-count=\"4152\">On Sunday, Steve Bellone, the Suffolk County executive, addressed the hundreds of people who had gathered, thanking them for building the temple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"236\" data-total-count=\"4388\">\u201cLong Island, Suffolk County, this nation, this world, is enriched, is made better, by all of the people inside this room here today, and what you believe, and what you preach, and what you practice every day in your life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"116\" data-total-count=\"4504\">Sometimes, Mr. Bellone said, he looks at the strife and war in the world and wonders what the future will look like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"208\" data-total-count=\"4712\">\u201cAnd then I come here,\u201d he said, \u201cand I look out into this room.
