{"id":36282,"date":"2017-02-13T17:55:48","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T12:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org\/?p=36282"},"modified":"2017-02-13T17:55:48","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T12:25:48","slug":"rain-accompanies-golden-chariots-maiden-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=36282","title":{"rendered":"Rain accompanies golden chariot&#039;s maiden journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pw-hidden-cp\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"eight columns\">\n<div class=\"article-header\"><br id=\"slcontent3_5_sleft_0_UpdatePanelBookmarkThis\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"service-panel\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-container\">\n<div id=\"slcontent3_5_sleft_0_mtLeadMedia_pnlMedia\" class=\"story-image\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"service-panel\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pw-hidden-cp\">\nGEORGE TOWN: A heavy downpour, unseen in recent years during Thaipusam, delayed the departure of the silver chariot from Kovil Veedu in Penang Street on Wednesday.<br \/>\n<span id=\"innity-in-post\"><\/span>The rain, which came pouring down at about 5.20am, pushed the departure of the silver chariot, owned by\u00a0Nattukotai Chettiar Temple,\u00a0from 6.30am to 7.20am.<br \/>\nHowever, some 200m away in Queen Street, the golden chariot left the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple for its maiden journey on scheduled at 5.20am.<br \/>\nThe golden chariot belonged to the Penang Hindu Endowment Board, the organisers of the Thaipusam festival.<br \/>\nTwenty devotees pulled the golden chariot after the <em>vel<\/em>\u00a0(spear) of Lord Muruga was placed on the altar of the chariot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pw-hidden-cp\">\nAfter making a brief stop at the end of Queen Street, the golden chariot moved at a faster pace along Chullia Street with thousands of devotees braving the rain and chanting <em>Om Muruga<\/em>.<br \/>\nThe golden chariot moved along Penang Street, where the organisers of the silver chariot were still waiting for the rain to stop in order to start the procession.<br \/>\nAlong the way, thousands of devotees lined the streets, with many arriving early in the morning from as far as Ipoh, Perak to watch the maiden journey of the golden chariot.<br \/>\nA short fireworks display before the departure of the silver chariot caught everyone by surprise.<br \/>\nNattukotai Chettiar Temple managing trustee M.
