English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) organised a cultural evening titled \u2018Dharohar\u2019 at the football ground, with an opening Carnatic music recital on Veena by Prof KGVijayakrishnan. Prof Vijayakrishnan started learning the Veena at the tender age of six from his mother Late Srimati Karpagavalli Gopalakrishnan who has followed the tradition of Veena Dhanammal style of Veena playing through training from Ranga Ramanuja Ayyangar.<\/p>\n
According to Prof Vijayakrishnan, Veena Dhanammal always believed that Veena was a \u2018Sarva Vadyam\u2019 and had melody and rhythm within the musical instrument. Therefore this style of playing would be without any accompaniment of percussion or Tanpura and the programs would normally happen in \u2018Chamber music\u2019 style.<\/p>\n
He started with a \u2018Varanam\u2019 composed by Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar in \u2018Raga Kalyani\u2019 set to \u2018Adi Talam\u2019. He then played an \u2018Alaap\u2019in Raga Hari Kambhoji followed by a Tyagaraja Kriti \u2018Enduku\u2019.He then played an \u2018Alaap\u2019 in Raga \u2018Reeti Gowla\u2019 and then played the composition \u2018Janani Ninnuvina \u00a0of \u00a0Subbaraya Sastri who is the son of famous trinity composer Syama Sastri.Vijayakrishnan went on to play a \u2018Ragamalika\u2019 with some ragas from the North Indian classical music also.<\/p>\n
He then played a Muthuswami Dikshitar kriti on the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Tanjavur.He concluded his recital with a \u2018Padam\u2019 in \u2018Pantuvarali\u2019 ragam expressing a courtesan\u2019s love for a Prince set to \u2018Adi Talam\u2019. \u00a0The concluding program was a \u2018Qawalli recital\u2019 by the Warsi brothers of Hyderabad who performed many \u2018Sufi\u2019 songs. They included \u2018Khwaja Mere Khwaja\u2019, \u2018Chaap Tilak Sab Chheeni Mose Naina Milaike\u2019 and \u2018Dama Dum Mast Qalandar\u2019.The nearby famous \u2018Heritage Stepwell\u2019 at EFLU was also decorated and illuminated on the occasion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
