{"id":5654,"date":"2016-05-04T11:29:06","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T11:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org?p=5651&amp;preview_id=5651"},"modified":"2016-05-04T11:29:06","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T11:29:06","slug":"temple-desecrated-by-burglars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=5654","title":{"rendered":"Temple desecrated by burglars | IOL"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Durban &#8211; Devotees of the Northdale Siva Nyana Sabha in Pietermaritzburg have been left devastated by a burglary which desecrated the temple.<\/p>\n<p>According to the chairman of the temple in Chetty Road, Sagren Phillips, the burglars smashed down the boundary wall between the temple and Ramatha Primary School at the weekend before stripping the building of significant brass Hindu idols, copper pipes, a Yamaha organ, PA system and kitchen implements, including massive cast iron pots, the kitchen geyser and a double-door fridge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"width: 511px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/classic.iol.co.za\/polopoly_fs\/nd-temple-raided-1.2017278!\/image\/3155862621.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/box_501\/3155862621.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"291\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Temple chairman, Sagren Phillips, with a damaged Hindu idol. Credit: Shan Pillay<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Phillips estimated the damage and losses to be more than R50\u2009000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just heartbreaking, that people could come into a place of worship and destroy it like this. We are absolutely devastated,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n<p>In the temple, holy brass lamps and statues of Hindu gods and goddesses were stolen, many of which had been donated by families in memory of their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a desecration of the worst kind, to disrespect such a sacred and holy place,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n<p>He said thieves tried to remove a huge brass statue of Hindu god Nataraja (cosmic dancing god).
