REUTERS\/Jitendra Prakash<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Shakya, a retired police official, says much water has flowed from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shipra_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shipra<\/a> river since he took his first dip in it as a young man nearly half a century ago.<\/p>\n<p>But dwindling water levels haven\u2019t stopped millions from thronging this temple town in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mp.nic.in\/aboutmp.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madhya Pradesh<\/a>. The ancient festival grows in size each time it is held.<\/p>\n<p>A rough estimate points to a turnout of 70 million visitors by the time the <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/news\/picture\/simhastha-kumbh-mela?articleId=INRTX2D21F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kumbh Mela (Pitcher Festival)<\/a> draws to a close on May 21, said Avinash Lavania, Ujjain\u2019s top municipal official who is also in charge of the Simhasth Mela (<a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/news\/picture\/simhastha-kumbh-mela?articleId=INRTX2D21F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">View slideshow<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>That is more than double the 30 million bathers Ujjain hosted in 2004. In 1992, it attracted 10 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Kumbh Mela, one of India\u2019s hallowed festivals, is held alternatively in the cities of Haridwar, Nashik, Ujjain and Prayag. REUTERS\/Jitendra Prakash<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Legend has it that these waters wash away lifetimes of sins and the popular Hindu pilgrimage spots attract tens of millions of bathers \u2014 including bearded ascetics known as sadhus \u2014 during specific planetary alignments that usher in a Kumbh Mela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLot of things have changed. I have seen Simhasth in 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, and this one,\u201d Shakya said. Back then it was simple and the rain-fed river Shipra, central to the holy dip, flowed freely, he said.<\/p>\n<p>By the summer of 2004, the river was reduced to a trickle and the state had to release water from a nearby dam to facilitate bathing on auspicious days for the shahi snan (Royal Bath), said Lavania.<\/p>\n<p>This year, to ensure the flow of water throughout the month-long festival, 5 cubic metres per second of water from the Narmada river is\u00a0being pumped at a cost of 720,000 rupees ($10,688) per day.\u00a0Around 2.7 billion rupees have been sanctioned for various Kumbh Mela activities, Lavania said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18330\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<div id=\"attachment_18330\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18330\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-18330 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/india\/files\/2016\/05\/ujjain6-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"A Hindu holy man looks on as another holds a trident after taking a dip in the waters of the river Shipra during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain, India, April 22, 2016. Now, he says it is glamorous and millions of rupees have been spent on setting up air-conditioned tents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is spirituality mixed with modernity. REUTERS\/Jitendra Prakash<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Some locals are not too happy about what they call diminishing piety among the visiting ascetics at the Kumbh Mela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no originality in Kumbh Mela these days. Seventy-five percent of babas are duplicate,\u201d said Ram Srivastav, a taxi driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShipra ji has no water. The real Kumbh was because of Shipra. So where\u2019s the originality?
