The city has also nurtured cultural, literary, Vedic and educational institutions. At the Kumbh Mela you get so see India as the land of story books. Constant exposure to the weather makes them resistant to temperature extremes. Their eyes are bloodshot from constantly smoking charas (marijuana), which they believe aids enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>Urdhwavahurs: \u00a0who have emaciated bodies from rigid spiritual practices.<\/p>\n<p>Parivajakas: \u00a0who have taken a vow of silence.<\/p>\n<p>Shirshasinse: \u00a0who remain standing, sleep with their heads resting on a vertical pole, and meditate standing on their heads.<\/p>\n<p>Kalpvasis: \u00a0who remain by the river banks and devote their time to meditating, performing rituals, and bathing numerous times a day million pilgrims<\/p>\n<p>This Kumbh Mela is one of those rare occasions when saints from all of the thirteen <em>akhadas<\/em> have come to participate. You can wander in the <em>chawni<\/em> or camp of each <em>akhada<\/em> and learn more about the lives of these ascetics. There are sadhavis there too.
