{"id":6795,"date":"2016-06-16T05:45:20","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T05:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org?p=6792&amp;preview_id=6792"},"modified":"2016-06-16T05:45:20","modified_gmt":"2016-06-16T05:45:20","slug":"jnu-all-set-to-celebrate-international-yoga-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=6795","title":{"rendered":"JNU all set to celebrate International Yoga Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"body\">Recently embroiled in a controversy over an event marking the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is slated to celebrate International Yoga Day, June 21, on the campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">A statement from the university said: \u201cJNU will organise a yoga workshop based on standard protocol approved by the Ministry of AYUSH from June 17-20 at JNU Stadium. The International Yoga Day programme will be held on June 21. Yoga teachers and instructors will train participants during the workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">The university will also organise lectures on the importance of yoga in Indian culture. Besides this, CDs and literature on yoga will also be available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">\u201cA lecture series on themes like \u2018Bhartiya Parampara Mein Yog\u2019, \u2018Yoga as Way of Life\u2019, \u2018Yoga for Harmony and Peace\u2019 and \u2018Yoga: Philosophy, Yoga for Mental and Physical Health\u2019 by speakers and scholars will be organised on June 20, the eve of International Yoga Day,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">MP Udit Raj will be the chief guest for the lecture series. The varsity has invited school children and JNU alumni for the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">Earlier this year, a proposal to introduce courses on yoga and Indian culture was moved in JNU. However, it was opposed by a section of teachers and students, who called it \u201csaffronisation of the university\u201d. JNU is now re-considering the proposal after it was discussed in an Academic Council meeting held in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\"><b>Proposed course<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"body\">\u201cA draft of the proposed course structure was rejected in the Academic Council meeting last year [in November]. The matter was raised again in the recent meeting held in May. There was opposition from certain teachers, while some favoured it.
