{"id":7148,"date":"2016-04-26T03:37:09","date_gmt":"2016-04-26T03:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org?p=7140&amp;preview_id=7140"},"modified":"2016-04-26T03:37:09","modified_gmt":"2016-04-26T03:37:09","slug":"sadhus-and-seers-take-holy-dip-during-ujjain-kumbh-mela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=7148","title":{"rendered":"Sadhus and seers take holy dip during Ujjain Kumbh Mela"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"arti_content_n\">\n<p>The city of Ujjain hosted the Kumbh Mela, the largest religious congregation of Hindus, with over five crore people including seers attending the holy city.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the four fairs traditionally recognised as Kumbha Melas, and is also known as Ujjain Kumbh Mela.<\/p>\n<p>As per the convention, all 13 &#8216;<em>akharas<\/em>&#8216; of seers took out a procession called &#8216;<em>Peshwai<\/em>&#8216; in Ujjain on the eve of the main fair.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu dropped drops of <em>amrita<\/em> (the drink of immortality) at four places, while transporting it in a <em>kumbha<\/em> (pot).\u00a0These four places, including Ujjain, are identified as the present-day sites of the Kumbh Mela.<\/p>\n<p>In its current form, it began in the 18th century when the Maratha ruler Ranoji Shinde invited ascetics from Nashik to Ujjain&#8217;s local festival.<\/p>\n<p>A river-side festival, it is celebrated on the banks of Shipra river<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Around five crore devotees take part in the Kumbh mela on the banks of pious Shipra river for which security has been ramped up in every nook and cranny of the district,&#8221; said Inspector General of Police, Ujjain Range, Madhu Kumar.<\/p>\n<p>At present, 22,000 security personnel, including the state policemen, personnel from central forces and other departments are on deployment, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the time of s<em>hahi snan<\/em> (royal dip) in Shipra river, 25,000 security personnel will keep a watch at the Mela venue,&#8221; Kumar added.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rediff.com\/\">Rediff.com<\/a><\/em> takes a peek at the celebrations<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"imgwidth\" src=\"http:\/\/im.rediff.com\/news\/2016\/apr\/26kumbh01.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"99%\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A STUDY IN BALANCE: An ascetic plays a riff on the Garudasana or the Eagle Pose.
