India’s latest tax reform, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) doesn’t spare our temples. A hundred and seventy-one temples in Andhra Pradesh with an income above Rs 20 lakh have come under the GST.<\/p>\n

There are 23,834 temples in the state, of which 45 temples come under the Rs 1 crore income category, 63 temples up to Rs 25 crore and seven temples with more than Rs 25 crore annual income, including Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the country\u2019s richest.<\/p>\n

\nEven as TTD escapes GST levy, the ingredients that go into making \u2018laddus\u2019 such as cashew nut and cow ghee attracts GST of 5% and 12%, respectively.<\/p>\n

Rooms with more than Rs 1,000 per day tariff attracts 18% GST, while certain Arjita Sevas are also expected to cost more from Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to create awareness among TTD staff about the shift to GST, this is new for them,\u201d a senior TTD officer said.<\/p>\n
