{"id":8561,"date":"2016-04-24T13:40:40","date_gmt":"2016-04-24T13:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalpress.hinduismnow.org?p=8558&amp;preview_id=8558"},"modified":"2016-04-24T13:40:40","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T13:40:40","slug":"will-not-interfere-in-customs-and-traditions-of-sabarimala-cm-oommen-chandy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpress-new.hinduismnow.org\/?p=8561","title":{"rendered":"Will not interfere in customs and traditions of Sabarimala: CM Oommen Chandy | The Indian Express"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span class=\"custom-caption\">The Chief Minister, who is in the midst of the assembly election campaign, said his government has already made its stand clear on the issue of Sabarimala where entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 is banned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Amid debate on the issue of entry of\u00a0women in the age group of 10 to 50 in the Lord Ayyappa Temple\u00a0at Sabarimala, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday made it\u00a0clear that his government would not interfere in the customs\u00a0and traditions of the hill shrine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment doesn\u2019t interfere beyond a point on matters\u00a0with regard to (religious) customs and faith,\u201d Chandy said\u00a0when asked about the stand of his government on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Minister, who is in the midst of the assembly\u00a0election campaign, said his government has already made its\u00a0stand clear on the issue of Sabarimala where entry of women in\u00a0the age group of 10 to 50 is banned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"holder-article\">\n<div class=\"likefb\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere are persons who have the right to deal with matters\u00a0related to faith and customs\u2026Let them take decisions on\u00a0such issues,\u201d Chandy told PTI, reacting to a query.<\/p>\n<p>When it was pointed out that some Hindu organisations and\u00a0even the RSS have supported women\u2019s entry at temples, Chandy\u00a0said, \u201cWe don\u2019t want to get into that controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a matter related to customs and faith. There are\u00a0people who have the right to take decisions on such issues,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, two religious bodies moved the Supreme Court\u00a0supporting a PIL seeking entry of women in the Sabarimala\u00a0Temple, saying no ritual or customs can be used as grounds to\u00a0discriminate against women in the matter of worship.<\/p>\n<p>Kerala-based bodies\u2013 Hind Navotthana Pratishtan, through\u00a0President Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha and Narayanashrama\u00a0Tapovanam, through its Managing Trustee Swami Bhoomananda\u00a0Tirtha, have filed the plea seeking to intervene in the PIL,\u00a0being heard by a bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo temple ritual, ceremony or custom can be made any\u00a0ground for discriminating against women in the matter of\u00a0worshipping in any temple, including Sabarimala, as it is a\u00a0clear violation of the constitutional equality and freedom\u00a0guaranteed for men and women alike,\u201d the plea, filed through\u00a0lawyer Ravi P Mehrotra, has said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the court had said gender equality was a\u00a0\u201cconstitutional message\u201d and ban on entry of women of a\u00a0particular age group in Sabarimala shrine cannot be claimed as\u00a0a right to manage religious affairs by its management.<\/p>\n<p>On January 11, the apex court had questioned the ban on\u00a0the entry of women of menstrual age group at the Lord Ayyappa\u00a0temple, while hearing the PIL.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/india-news-india\/sabarimala-temple-women-entry-ban-oommen-chandy-2768083\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will not interfere in customs and traditions of Sabarimala: CM Oommen Chandy | The Indian Express<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chief Minister, who is in the midst of the assembly election campaign, said his government has already made its stand clear on the issue of Sabarimala where entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 is banned.
