Four devotees died and several others suffered injuries after a stampede at the famous Arunachaleswarar temple in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu on Monday.

Around 7,000 devotees gathered around the tank, situated outside the temple premises, to witness dipping of the presiding deity in the water (theerthavari).There are four gates around the tank, and when the western gate was opened around 6.45am, the devotees rushed to tank, leading to the stampede.
Four devotees lost balance and were drowned. Several others were injured. The injured include a few priests.
The deceased were identified as Punniyakodi, Siva, Venkatesan and Manikandan. Siva is an IT professional from Chennai.
Fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the injured.
