Today marks a day immense significance for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, and for all those who look up to their elders and teachers. A Hindu and Nepalese festival, on Guru Purnima the people pay respect and show gratitude to their teachers through Guru Puja.
The festival, though traditionally celebrated by Buddhists in remembrance of Lord Buddha, who gave his first sermon on this day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, it is celebrated by many Hindus too, for whom this day is marked by remembering and paying homage to the great sage Vyasa, a symbol of the guru-shishya tradition. It is called Purnima because it is observed on the day of the full moon.
In Nepal, the celebrations are more mainstream. Guru Purnima is celebrated as the Teachers’ Day in Nepal. Students honour their teachers by offering garlands, delicacies and special hats made with indigenous fabric.
So, should you want to thank your teachers, your spiritual gurus, the people who have guided you all your life, do it today. To help put your emotions into words, here are some SMSes, WhatsApp and Facebook greetings and wishes that you could consider sending across.
