CUTTACK: The Justice BP Das Commission of Inquiry, constituted by the State Government to recommend reforms in Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri, is likely to appoint a Vigilance officer in the temple and also revamp its security system.
After studying the functioning of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam(TTD) temple, the one-member Judicial Commission, Justice BP Das on Wednesday said there is a need for reformation in the Jagannath temple’s administration. “There will be no reformation in tradition and rituals, but the Commission will recommend bringing discipline in overall administration,” Justice Das told mediapersons here.
The Commission, which is now observing the activities in Jagannath temple, may recommend appointment of a Vigilance officer who will maintain vigil on temple’s income and expenditure, Justice Das said.
A four-member team comprising Justice BP Das; assessor, Gopabandhu Mallik; secretary of Commission, BP Parija; and member of Commission, MM Tripathy had visited the Tirupati temple for two days to study its functioning and management system. The team returned on Wednesday.
The team members interacted with Joint Executive Officer, Chief of the Security and Fire and other senior administrative officials of the Tirupati temple and studied measures taken by the TTD trust for crowd management, ‘darshan’ by devotees, smooth conduct of timely rituals, ‘prasad’ preparation and distribution, besides the security arrangements.
“The administrative structure in Tirupati temple has two cadres – one belonging to temple cadre and another comprising administrative officials of departments like health, security and vigilance. Officials of both the cadres are led by an IAS cadre Joint Commissioner. An SP level police officer is also in-charge of the entire security system of the temple,” Justice Das informed. He added that there is a need for an absolute revamp of the security system in Jagannath temple at Puri.
