The Kerala government today decided to hold temple poorams, including the Thrissur Pooram famous for its caparisoned elephants, by adhering to the guidelines of Captive Elephant Management Rules, 2012.
A meeting convened by state Tourism Minister A C Moideen resolved to conduct poorams without causing any break in the tradition and culture, a release issued here said.
The meeting was held as per the directive of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the back drop of demands for restriction on parading elephants during temple festivals.
The elephants should not be used because they are being tortured for a ritual that isn’t needed. If the religion needs a spectacle, then use a fake elephant and stop hurting the real ones.
