A plan to construct ‘rajagopuram,’ about 72 feet in height, for Sri Pundarikaksha Perumal Temple at Tiruvellarai near Mannachanallur has been mooted by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department.
It is a sub-temple of Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.
Some preliminary measures have been taken up for preparing the building material using conventional raw materials. The brick structures up to the basement of a ‘rajagopuram’ alone is available now. The ‘rajagopuram’ will be built using the conventional materials and a machinery for preparing the materials has been brought to the temple.
“It needs a lot of effort to construct the ‘rajagopuram’ atop the brick structure which is called ‘mottai gopuram.’ The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, would extend its service. The HR and CE Department and the IIT, Madras, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding soon.
