Perhaps, President Mukherjee is the first person who observes Maha Shivratri in Rashtrapati Bhawan complex.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended their revered greetings to the people on Mahashivratri.

Mahashivratri , celebrated annually in reverence of Lord Shiva, falls on the 13th night and 14th day of Phalguna month  as per Hindu almanac.

While PM Modi tweeted, “महाशिवरात्रि की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं। Maha Shivratri greetings to everyone”, the President Mukherjee maintained a day fasting until he offered water on the Shivalinga in the Shiva Temple in the Rashtrapati Bhawan complex. President Mukherjee seeks blessings of Lord Shiva for the prosperity on the Nation.

The Rashtrapati Bhawan website published the picture of President Mukherjee worshiping on Mahashivratri.

Perhaps Shri Mukherjee is the first president of India who celebrated Maha Shivratri in Rashtrapati Bhawan (President’s House), as per record.

India’s first president Babu Rajendra Prasad inaugurated and took part in the ‘prana pratistha’ (making alive the deity) in the renovated Somnath Temple in Gujarat on 11 May, 1951. But, it is not known whether he worshiped in the Shiva Temple in Rashtrapati Bhawan on any Maha Shivratri.
