Arulmigu Anandavalli Ambal Samedha Chandrasekarar Temple is located at Umbalapadi village, en route Kapisthalam, Papanasam taluk, Thanjavur district.

Inscriptions indicate that the village was known as Umbalapadi and Edhirilichozhanallur during the Chola period.
The village was known as Umbalapadi even before the reign of Rajaraja Chola but got the name of Edhirili Chozhanallur during the regnal years of Kulothunga Chola II (1,133 AD -1,150 AD). Edhirili Cholan was another name for Kulothunga Chola II.
Kulothunga’s inscription, found amid the remains of this 900-year-old Siva, which mentions the village as ‘Edhirili Chozhanallur’ also refers to the name of the deity as Nilaavanai Mahadevar.
The presiding deity is a swayambu and is seen with the crescent on His locks because it is said that Chandran, one of the navagrahas, worshipped the Lord here.
This ancient temple, which was in a state of disrepair has been taken up for renovation.

The parivara murtis and the icons of the deities, which were missing from the dilapidated structure, were traced to a place, where the villageres had kept them safely.
Restoration began a year ago and the Umbalappady Mahadevar Trust was formed to collect funds.
Construction is making slow but steady progress and awaits funds to complete the work.
