The historical Ramappa temple in Warangal district has been nominated as India’s entry to UNESCO for its recognition as the World Heritage Site.
Ramappa temple was added in the tentative list in 2014 after Kakatiya Heritage Trust (KHT) took the initiative of attending the consultation seminar held at Chennai and submitted the proposal to the Government of India before bifurcation of combined Andhra Pradesh.
Announcing the nomination of Ramappa temple here on Friday, Minister for Tourism and Culture A. Chandulal thanked Union Minister for Culture Mahesh Sharma. Secretary (Tourism and Culture) B. Venkatesham thanked Secretary Ministry of Culture N.K. Sinha and Director General of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) R. Tewari for their support during the dossier submission process.
The Minister stated that Trustees of KHT B.V. Papa Rao and Prof. Pandu Ranga Rao had been working for the nomination of the monument for recognition by UNESCO as the World Heritage Site and led the dossier preparation.
Mr. Venkatesham explained that a proposal was submitted to the Government of India in 2015 but Ramappa temple was not selected as India’s nomination. Every country would send one historical site as its nomination to UNESCO every year.
The process of resubmission of nomination dossier once again was started in 2016 and the proposal was finally approved by the Ministry of Culture.
Stating that the nomination was submitted to UNESO on February 1, Mr. Venkatesham explained that UNESCO would process the nomination and send a team of experts to Ramappa temple to examine the site. Later, it would take a decision to declare.
