AGRA: In a sensational robbery, an idol of Shesh Nag, made of ashtdhatu (a combination of eight metals), which was installed by President Dr Pranab Mukherjee at Chandrodaya Temple at Vrindavan in November 2014, was reportedly stolen on Monday night.

According to the PRO of the temple, Anant Veer Das, the robbery was discovered on Tuesday morning and the police was informed about it. He said the police had started its investigation and sniffer dogs were also pressed into action but so for there were no positive leads.

Das said the police suspect the involvement of some localities and they were probing the angle. He however, refused to comment on the price of the idol. Ashtdhatu is a combination of eight metals- gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, tin, iron and mercury.

When contacted, Mukund Diwedi, SP (city) Mathura, confirmed that they had received information about the theft but said that the temple authorities had so far filed no official complaint. He said the police were looking into the incident.

According to temple officials, Dr Mukherjee had installed the idol of shesh nag (a mythical 5 headed-snake that stands with its fangs open over the head of Lord Vishnu) during the foundation laying ceremony of the temple in Nov 2014. Once constructed, the Lord Krishna’s ‘Chandrodaya’ temple is expected to be thrice as the height of 72.5 metre-high Qutub Minar and it would cost around Rs 300 crore.
