In the absence of Nirmal Kumar, his wife Sonali was having an affair with UAE resident Arshad. When Nirmal found out, he tried to get her to stay with him in same town but she had other plans. She got Ajmal to come back to India and one day when Nirmal came home, she got Ajmal to come to their home.

Together, they strangled Nirmal Kumar and dumped his body in nearby drain. Initially they suggested that Nirmal must have fallen in drain under influence of alcohol but when postmortem report suggested strangulation as cause of death, they broke down and confessed their hand in crime.
